Surf servers are built around travelling across sloped surfaces while preserving speed through controlled strafing and careful routing. On course-based servers, players complete stages against a timer, use checkpoints, and compare recorded times. Combat Surf introduces weapons and direct opposition on open arenas, so the Surf label alone does not establish the exact rules. Maps for the mode normally use the `surf_` prefix. The current map identifies the course and can give an indication of its style, while the player count helps you choose between a quieter practice environment and one with more competition for leaderboard times. Available slots show whether you can join immediately, and tags may indicate Combat, RPG, staged routes, or other additions. Before connecting by IP, check the Surf variant, checkpoint and save commands, weapon restrictions, stage count, and how the server handles returning to a completed section.
